In a press release on Tuesday, October 25, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, operator of Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun, announced the hiring of Robert Rubenstein as its new senior vice president and general counsel.

Until January, Rubenstein held the same titles for 9 years at U.S.-based Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS:New York)?as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Sands China Limited (HKG:1928), the Hong Kong Stock Exchange listed company. Rubenstein also served concurrently Senior Vice President and Global Deputy General Counsel for Las Vegas Sands, the parent company of Sands China. Looking to expand its operations into Asia, earlier this year a consortium led by Mohegan Sun was awarded a casino license by the South Korean government. The award was part of an integrated resort license bidding process that the firm initiated in 2015. Inspire Integrated Resort Co Ltd., a South Korean subsidy of Mohegan Sun, was acquired by South Korean chemicals manufacturer KKC Corp for US$176 million in November last year and together with Incheon International Airport Corp. and Mohegan Sun comprise the consortium. Following that, Mohegan Sun confirmed its plan to submit a proposal for an integrated resort in South Korea’s Incheon Free Economic Zone. The plans include a foreigners-only casino.

According to Mohegan Sun, the project’s first phase has an estimated budget of US$1.6 billion and a total commitment of US$5 billion to be realized over multiple phases. In February, the company’s president, Bobby Soper, reportedly told GGRAsia, that ground is expected?to be broken for the new property in 2017, according to the news agency.

Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun was one of 34 requests the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism received from February 27 to June 30, 2015, vying for the two permits.
